A meta description tag provides search engines a summary of what the page is about. A page’s title may have few words, whereas a meta description tag might include some sentences or a short paragraph.
If the meta description is long, then it could be absolutely cumbersome for users to read through the section. Long and winding summaries put off users who are keen to understand the page in brief. Search engines like Google also reveal a limited summary of the page, to 160 characters, making longer content useless and redundant.
Google imposes no limits on how long a meta description can be, but search engine snippets revealed in the results are truncated to fit in the device width.
